La Gran Piedra, within the Baconao Park in Santiago de Cuba, is a mountain range in which there is a unique phenomenon that is at the same time the highest point of the island and the country. It is a rock measuring 51 meters long and 25-30 wide and weighing 63,000 tons, the largest found in the entire Caribbean, an incredible natural accident worth seeing.
It is located on the top of a mountain at 1,225 meters above sea level, which makes it an unbeatable place to enjoy the views and has made it appear in the Guinness Book of Records for being the largest rock located highest in the world. From this natural viewpoint you can see the natural landscape of the Baconao Park and the city of Santiago de Cuba and its tall buildings as well as the ruins of the old properties of the lords of the area. To get to this point, the tourist has to climb 452 stairs, although with some breaks, a climb that, among the thick fog that always flies over the area, turns the climb into a magical experience.
In addition, this stone caused the eruption of an underwater volcano, it has a fauna and flora that improves the panorama even if it fits. The surroundings of La Gran Piedra are surrounded by 222 varieties of ferns and 352 of orchids, as well as eucalyptus, pine, cypress and fruit trees. To this is added the great multitude of birds that always fly over the top of the rock: woodpeckers, hawks, tocororo ... All this makes the site a very special place that was declared a National Monument in 1991.
