El Cobre is a relatively small town located at the eastern end of Cuba that belongs to the province of Santiago de Cuba. A city with which you may first experience rejection, but also one of the regions whose historical evolution has been the most investigated, so if you are one of those who like to return home knowing new things, this is your destination. Although it is true that there are not endless places to see in El Cobre, the few places you go will provide you with more than innumerable reasons why you will want to repeat.
For a long time, exactly since 1599 as a consequence of the decision of Francisco Sánchez de Moya, this town has been called Santiago del Prado. The name of El Cobre was received from the homonymous mineral that is extracted in this area due to a deposit discovered in 1529, and it is that, although the stage of greatest splendor did not occur until decades later, immediately after its discovery it became what even today is the main activity of the place. It should be noted here, however, that the first miners go back to the pre-Hispanic communities that occupied these lands, and through which they managed to elaborate varied and essential utensils for their future development.
El Cobre, for being a small town of barely 7,000 inhabitants, has a fundamental history without which Cuba would not have been what it was in the past or what it is today. Witness of slavery, trade, mining and revolution, it is one of the most atypical and at the same time most charming cities to visit on your trip to Cuba because, in addition, you can be a participant in the adoration of the Virgin of El Cobre, the quintessential symbol of the country that has chosen this beautiful town as its residence.
