The House of Diego Velázquez in Santiago de Cuba is the oldest house in all of Cuba built in 1515 as the home of the Spanish colonist and conqueror of the island that now functions as the Museum of the Cuban Historical Environment.
Under the orders of Hernán Cortés, this majestic property was built that served as a Contracting House and a gold smelting workshop in which the collected gold was transformed into ingots and sent to Spain. Shortly after, a second floor was added to the building that would be the home of the famous conqueror of Cuba, Governor Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar. After having been a hotel, offices and workshops, in 1970 the CHiuse of Diego Velázquez became a Museum of Cuban Historical Atmosphere where centuries of Cuban history, culture and tradition can be learned.
Inside this colonial jewel you can find furniture that covers the different predominant styles from the 16th to the 19th century. This National Monument keeps pieces of French, British, Spanish and Cuban origin that include carved trunks and luxurious porcelain. In addition to admiring the architecture of such a significant building, you can also visit the furnace where gold was melted in the first years of colonization and in the gallery "El Aljibe" located inside you will enjoy plastic exhibitions or cultural activities such as traditional music concerts.
