The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, located in the central Céspedes Park, also known as the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba, is the fourth temple that has risen in the city since the 16th century.
In 1516 the Governor Diego Velázquez was granted the creation of a Bishopric in Cuba with which the town's church became the Cathedral Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. However, this construction and those that followed would suffer numerous attacks, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes and pirate looting that would cause the need to rebuild the temple three times.
In 1810 the first stone of what would be the fourth and last Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba was laid, which would take 8 years to build. The new church would occupy 2,115 square meters, a large temple with five neoclassical naves that, thanks to the two towers located on the sides of it, becomes the tallest building in the entire city.
