The Plaza de Marte in Santiago de Cuba today is a beautiful space where you can walk and rest from the heat and bustle of this Cuban city. In the not so distant past, it was a training place for the island's Spanish colonizing army and later headquarters of clandestine meetings of the conspirators against the metropolis.
In the five thousand square meters that the plaza occupies, a great column of Liberty is placed in its center, crowned by a Phrygian cap and defended by four gigantic bronze cannons, which celebrates the liberation of the nation. In the same way, the three statues of relevant figures in the history of the country are celebrated, Perucho Figueredo, composer of the national anthem, General Francisco Sánchez Hechavarría, the first elected governor of the Oriente province, and Dr. Joaquín Castillo Duany, the first Cuban explorer of the North Pole and revolutionary. The figure of José Martí and two key pieces against the Batista dictatorship, Montes de Oca and Camilo Cienfuegos, could not be missing either in the square and their representation completes the panoramic view of it.
It is a space in which the past is vindicated and the heroes of the nation are honored, but without a doubt what you will like the most about this place are the quiet walks with good company in which to enjoy pleasant talks and the beautiful landscape of this square.
