Pico Turquino is the highest point in Cuba located in Sierra Maestra, municipality of Guamá in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Already in the 16th century its existence was confirmed by the geographer Gerardo Kramer and in 1991 it was declared a National Monument.
To access this unusual place of lush nature, it is necessary to go up routes that sometimes are not the best enabled for the ascent, either on the Santiago de Cuba side or on the Granma side. In 1915 the first men to reach the summit were registered and in 1957 it was the Rebel Army who had to climb this mountain. At its top there is a statue of José Martí that watches over the vast landscape that can be seen from the highest point of the island
It is located in the Turquino National Park, an area of 17,000 hectares that is home to the highest peaks in Cuba, the Pico Real Turquino with 1,974 meters, Cuba with 1,872 meters and Sweden with 1,734 meters. All of them are witnesses of how ecotourism is an increasingly widespread practice among the young and not so young whose adrenaline surpasses the fear they may have of heights. There is no doubt, then, that it is one of the regions most visited by, above all, tourists seeking adventure and direct contact with nature. And the park is home to a great variety of flora and fauna, with 50% of the country's endemic flora and the altitude fresh mountain ecosystem, unique on the island, and more than 600 animal species. The lands of this area also bathe several rivers fed by the abundant rains, La Plata, Palma, Mocha, Yara and Turquino.
