The San Francisco Church in Santiago de Cuba is one of the many temples built in Cuba by Franciscan monks and one of the oldest in the city only behind the Santa Catalina Church.
The construction of the San Francisco Castle in the vicinity of the church caused noisy problems among the religious and the military, so in 1744 it was decided to build another church in a different location. This new temple was demolished by an earthquake in 1766, so a new building had to be built, which is the one we have seen today since 1804. The Church, which also houses a convent, is no longer inhabited by Franciscan monks but instead the Paúles Pastors live here.
The church with three naves stands out for its interesting neoclassical façade decorated with a small balcony and two decorated busts. The main entrance is under a portal supported by two large pillars and, on each of its sides, there are two doors framed by pilasters and pediments. A bell tower raises the temple in a central position and endows the building with great beauty.
