Cayo Granma, formerly called Cayo Smith by the presence of Americans, is a small town in Santiago de Cuba where you will find the typical parameters existing in every town in Cuba: narrow streets, picturesque wooden houses, a story still on the rise today and popular festivals.
This area was inhabited only by pre-Hispanic groups, who were later joined by those people from the emigration that emerged in the hamlet of La Socapa as a result of the invasion by Americans to it. This, together with the fact that the richest people left the key and a hurricane passed through it in 2012, led to it becoming a place populated by very humble people. But not everything was going to be bad, because precisely for that reason their neighbors are the kindest to those who visit them.
This endearing demarcation can only be seen in about 20 minutes, but you will like touring the town so much that it will be impossible to ride the boat back to Santiago. Cayo Granma catches you and wraps you in a spiral of enjoyment all year round and even more so if you go on certain dates such as the Jaiba or Carijai Festival, or the Aquatic Carnival, the latter invention of the first tourists to arrive.
