Alejandro de Humboldt was a Prussian naturalist, geographer, explorer, and philosopher. His curiosity of the world led him to the beautiful island of Cuba. Humboldt spent several months in the country during both of his visits. The result of these visits: valuable information regarding Cuban geology as well as latitude maps of ports and cites, such as Havana. Today, Cubans pay homage to Humboldt and recognize him as “the second discoverer of Cuba.” The museum, Museo Casa Alejandro de Humboldt (Alejandro de Humboldt House Museum), located near the Plaza de San Francisco de Asís in Old Havana is devoted entirely to the natural sciences.
The most visited exhibition in the museum is the one that displays all of the scientific and notable data collected by the naturalist. It features illustrations, books, copies of original documents, and even some of Humboldt’s scientific instruments. And, in the Andalusian-style patio inside the museum, visitors can find an exact replica of a Kritosaurus, made of its fossils. Other exhibitions related to the environment, ecology, nature, natural sciences, and social sciences rotate through the museum.
