One of the fortresses designed to defend Havana against the English invaders was the Tower of Cojimar, in the town of the same name. It is located on the coast and belongs to the system of fortifications of the capital that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Tower of Cojimar is right next to another important place of interest in the area, the Hemingway Monument. It is a structure of obvious Greek style and round in shape, in the centre of which is a bust of Ernest Hemingway. The American writer was inspired by Cojímar to write his work The Old Man and the Sea, and spent much time in the area, befriending the locals and winning their affection.
