A little south of the Plaza Vieja (Old Town Square), on Calle Cuba, visitors can find the beautiful Convento de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Convent). The facades, single side tower, multiple cloisters, and the convent’s interior streets that make it feel like you're in a different city are sure to impress. A visit to the Convento de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Convent) is a great way to learn about Cuba’s religious history and the life of the women who lived in the convent.
The convent was built in November 1638 with the intent of protecting the unwed young women of the city. When the founding nuns of Cartagena de Indias took over the building it became the first convent of Old Havana, exclusively for women. Today, the building belongs to the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office), which is in charge of preserving and promoting tourism on the island.
Since then the convent has undergone several modifications, such as the addition of two side hallways and the reconstruction of the facades. Visitors can also appreciate the three cloisters that make up the convent; they lead to the convent’s galleries, old cells and exhibitions. Outside, visitors can admire the colonial-style courtyard, which was once a blossoming orchard, and the small cemetery.
