Inside the Castillo de la Real Fuerza (Castle of the Royal Force), you will find the Museo de la Navegación (Navigation Museum). Both of these attractions are located in the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana. And while the building the museum is housed in is the oldest building in the Americas, it continues to be an excellently preserved architectural work in Cuba.
The Museo de la Navegación opened in 2008, long after the castle was built. The museum was created with the intention of teaching the public about Cuba’s naval history, underwater archeology, and the country’s history with shipbuildings.
Cuba’s relationship to the sea has always been strong. Conquistadores travelled to the country in their ships, modified the ships of others as technology advanced, and dealt with shipwrecks along the islands coasts.
Inside visitors can enjoy some of the objects from these shipwrecks as well as a replica of the Santisima Trinidad (Holy Trinity ship) made to scale. It is considered the largest Spanish ship of all time.
