A few streets away from the Plaza del Cristo (Christ Plaza) in Old Havana, visitors can find the Museo de la Farmacia Habanera (Havana Pharmacy Museum). The museum building is painted in bright colors, like many others in its surroundings, but it is the building's old appearance that makes it stand out. The Museo de la Farmacia Habanera is a great way to learn about the history of pharmaceutical sciences in the city. It is also a beautiful building worth visiting for its architectural style, representative of its time.

The building the museum is housed in was founded by three Spanish pharmacists in 1886 who named their business La Reunion. However, after dissolving their company years later, only one of the pharmacists retained ownership of the business: José Sarrá y Valldejulí. After José Sarrá y Valldejulí passed away, the pharmacy was passed unto several different owners. It underwent several changes, all of which transformed it into the building visitors see today. Wide counters, breathtaking stained-glass windows, decorated ceilings, beautifully blue colored walls, and chandeliers are just some of the features of this neo-gothic structure. Finally, in 2004, it was inaugurated as the Museo de la Farmacia Habanera.

The museum houses three exhibition rooms. The first one shows visitors the original room where the pharmacists sold their products. It also contains all of the original furniture. Many people continue to buy medicines inside this room, all of which are natural. The second exhibition room displays objects collected from other pharmacies in Havana and a collection of books of ancient formulas considered an important source of information in Cuban medicine. And the third exhibition room gives visitors an in-depth looks into the sales of medicine and natural pharmaceutical products.
