If you’re looking for a break from museums and colonial houses, visit the cosmic Planetario in Havana. The planetarium is located on Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street), next to the Plaza Vieja (Old Town Square). You can easily recognize it by the sign that hangs from the arches of the building.
The idea for a planetarium traces back to Dr. Rosa Elena Simeón, an important Cuban scientist, researcher, and ex Minister of Science, Technology, and the Environment, who suggested that the city create a more interactive museum. In order to move forward with her proposal, she brought the idea to Eusebio Leal, a then member of the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office). And by December 21, 2009 the planetarium was inaugurated.
The planetarium is a collaborative project between the Japanese government, the Cuban Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente (Ministry of Science, Technology, and the Environment), and the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office). Japanese collaboration on the project aimed to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Today you can visit this interactive Planetarium and enjoy exhibitions, activities, and journey your way through the stars. Some of the exhibitions include:
1. Sala de la Cosmonáutica (Cosmos Hall). Learn about Cuban scientific theories regarding the Big Bang and the Cuban-Russian space flight of 1980.
2. Galería de las Escalas (Big Bang Gallery). Listen and watch the Big Bang phenomena occur, all within a glass ball, at the grasp of your hands.
3. Teatro Espacial (Space Theater). Get up close to the stars, planets, comets and touch the sky in this celestial chamber.
