The Palacio del Conde Lombillo (Conde de Lombillo Palace) is located in the Plaza de la Catedral; It is one of the historical and more beautiful buildings you can find in the surrounding area.
The palace, built in the eighteenth century, did not originally belong to the Lombillo family of Havana. It was only after Count Lombillo wed a descendent of the Pedroso and Florencia families that the mansion fell under his ownership and namesake. And for several generations the Lombillo family occupied the palace.
Although the palace’s traditional Spanish courtyard and Old Havana style rooms are remarkable, what is most noteworthy is the stone sculpted mailbox that is still in use. Inscribed is the Spanish word “Buzon,” which means mailbox, and a unique carving of a face in distress. You can drop your mail through the slit carved into the face’s mouth.
Since 2000, the Palacio del Conde de Lombillo has been the headquarters for the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office), which protects and preserves Havana’s areas of cultural and historical significance.
