Benito Juarez is a highly regarded political figure in Mexico. His liberal ideology, political ideas, and advocacy for defense against foreign invaders marked a before and after in Mexican politics and history. And across the America’s, sculptures, educational institutions, and political parties pay tribute to his name. The Museo Casa de México Benito Juárez (Benito Juárez House of Mexico Museum) in Cuba does the same. Located on Calle Obra Pía (Obra Pía Street) in Old Havana, the museum is a great place for visitors to stop by and learn about this illustrious character and Mexican culture.
The museum is housed in a magnificent 17th century building that once belonged to the Pedroso family, known as one of the oldest families in Cuba. Inside, visitors can enjoy the plastic and popular art exhibitions as well as collections of handmade Mexican crafts. This museum also features a library dedicated to Mexican poet and writer, Alfonso Reyes, and a conference room where the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office) hosts events. And outside, visitors can enjoy the museum’s colorful courtyards. This open-space is often used for artistic performances.
