The Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso (Theatre) is the headquarters of the Cuban National Ballet and Opera. It's located on the Paseo Martí (Promenade) , just next to the magnificent Capitolio de La Habana (Havana Capitol). It's one of the most luxurious buildings in the country. Famous opera, ballet and theatre stars have performed on its stage, making it one of the most important cultural institutions in Latin America.
The current building was opened in 1914 on the old Teatro Tacón, making it the oldest functioning theatre in Western culture. It is decorated in a distinctive neo-baroque style inspired by European baroque architecture, hence the abundance of stone carvings and sculptures. The main façade has four exquisite white marble sculptures representing allegories of Charity, Education, Music and Theatre.
Its most significant room is the Garcia Lorca room where great world-class artists such as the dancer's Anna Pavlova and Alicia Alonso have passed through.
