You can find the Casa de las Américas (House of the Americas) in the Vedado district of Havana. The house, built by the Revolutionary Government in 1959, was meant to help foster socio-cultural relations with countries in Latin America and the rest of the Caribbean. Today, it is recognized as a prestigious cultural centre in Cuba as it supports and publishes the works of artists throughout the continent.
The building is home to both permanent and temporary exhibitions and collections. Inside, you can delve through the extensive collections of the departments of literature, theatre, plastic arts, or music research and even brush up on your history by visiting the Caribbean Studies Center, Women’s Studies program and the Casa de las Américas Editorial Collection.
The Casa de las Américas is also home to the José Antonio Echeverría Library, one of the most important promoters of Latin American and Caribbean literature with over 126,000 books and 136,000 newspaper publications. Casa de las Américas is also in charge of publishing 6 magazines: Casa Magazine, Conjunto Magazine, Anales del Caribe, Boletín de Música, La Ventana, and Arteamérica.
Its work within the community and the continent earned Casa de las Américas the UNESCO-UNAM Jaime Torres Bodet Prize in January 2018 as decided by representatives from UNESCO and the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
