Revolution Square, constructed during the reign of President Fulgencio Batista, is one of the largest in the world with a space of 72,000 square meters. During the Cuban Revolution, the square housed a number of political rallies marking it as a symbol of Cuban history.
The northern area of the square is home to the building of the Ministry of the Interior, which, perched on its facade, depicts the famous sculptural relief of Che Guevera. In 2009 another matching steel sculpture, this time in honour of Camilo Cienfuegos, was placed on the facade of the Telecommunications building.
On the east side of the Plaza, you can find the José Martí National Library and opposite to it is the National Theater of Cuba.
The best-known recognized monument in Revolution Square is the José Martí Memorial at the centre of the square.
