Inside the beautiful bright green building on Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street) lies the Museo Casa de África (Africa House Museum) of Old Havana. The museum commemorates the influence African culture has had on Cuba over the years and remembers the countless number of free men brought to the country on Spanish ships to work as slaves.
There are several collections in the museum. One of the highlights: the Fernando Ortiz exhibition. Ortiz, an Afro- Cuban historian, made great contributions to cultural anthropology and is considered an important figure on the island. In his collection of works, books, and personal objects, ties to religious practices, such as witchcraft, have been found. Another contributor to the museum is Fidel Castro. He donated his own collection of African objects to the Museo Casa de África.
Exhibitions in the museum are divided by theme: musical instruments, carvings, ivories, and masks. Visitors can also enjoy various cultural activities in the museum such as guided tours, interactive and educational shows featuring African deities, and an African regions specialized library.
