Perhaps one of the last things visitors expect to see as they walk through Old Havana, is a cathedral that looks like it was brought over directly from Russia. The Catedral Ortodoxa de Nuestra Señora de Kazán (Our Lady of Kazan Orthodox Cathedral), on Avenida del Puerto, is a beautiful architectural work that stands out among the neighboring buildings. It is known for its particular Russian style, proximity to the ocean, and spectacular views.
The cathedral, built in 2004, was meant to provide a home to Cuba’s orthodox community, made up of Russians, Greeks and immigrants from other Slavic countries. The construction of the cathedral was so significant that the laying of the first stone was led by the Metropolitan of Moscow and Russia, Cyril I of Moscow. 32 months later, when construction was completed, the country’s Orthodox community had gained a beautiful religious building.
The Byzantine style cathedral is designed with six large domes: two gold domes, which can be found at the center of the cathedral and in an adjacent tower, and four bronze domes crowned with solid gold crosses. The entrance welcomes visitors with an elegant granite staircase, which was brought from the Cuban province, Sancti Spíritus. The staircase is said to be the second largest staircase built outside of Russia.
Inside, splashes of white and gold overwhelms the eye. Murals, lamps, paintings, and the classic Cuban touch of greenery decorate the walls of the cathedral. And you can't miss the beautiful golden altar, decorated with carefully sculpted religious images.
