The Iglesia Parroquial del Espíritu Santo (Church of the Holy Spirit), located on Calle Acosta (Acosta Street), is one of the oldest churches in Havana. Its simple and classic architectural style gives visitors insight into its era and invites passer-buyers to come inside.
The church was built atop of a previous chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit in 1638. It was not until Bishop Valdés decided to build a parish, that the church’s main chapel was built and named after the chapel that once stood on the name site. Today, under the main chapel, the bishop and other important figures are buried.
Over the years, the church has undergone several modifications as well as a recent restoration that preserved several of the old and beautiful aspects of the building. The church’s only entrance is flanked by a bell tower. This style was common in churches built in the 17th century in Cuba. The church's façade is what draws the most attention from visitors. Its Moorish, Arab, and neoclassical styles are sure to capture your attention.
