The Militar Morro-Cabaña Historical Park is composed of two impressive fortresses: Morro Castle (Castillo de los Tres Santos Reyes del Morro) and Fort Saint Charles (Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña) or El Morro and La Cabaña for short. Together, the castles make up the largest and most powerful defence complex built by the Spanish in the Americas to protect themselves from those seeking to intrude on Havana. Today, tourists can visit the UNESCO Heritage Site and enjoy stunning views of the city.
The fortresses were restored in the 1980’s by the City Historian’s Department (Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad) and the Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces (Ministerio de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias). When the renovations were completed, the park and several museums were opened to the public.
You can find the Casa del Ché Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Casa del Ché), dedicated to the Cuban national hero, in Fort Saint Charles (Fortaleza de San Carlos) in the Cabaña.
At night you can hear the “9 o'clock cannon” or “cañonazo de las 9” as was done in 18th century Cuba.
