The most famous street in Old Havana, Calle Obispo (Bishop Street), is packed with locals, visitors, colorful, elegant buildings, balconies that hang over the streets, colorful blooming flowers, cozy shops, restaurants, and shops with striped canopies that provide a temporary escape from the sun as you gaze through the shop windows. Located near the Plaza de Armas, Calle Obispo is a must-visit spot for all visitors passing through the city.
The street, opened in the 16th century, was originally filled by horses and carriages. Eventually, it became a street for pedestrians who took refuge in the narrow streets shade. At one point, the street, famous for its commerce, was even recognized under the name of San Juan and Pi Margall.
Calle Obispo commemorates various historical characters, especially those who have lived on the famous street such as philosopher, Félix Varela, and writer, Ernest Hemingway. Take a walk down the street, in the famous footsteps of its residents, before taking a break at one of its exquisite restaurants or bars and enjoying the best Cuban cuisine has to offer.
The long street leads visitors straight to Plaza de Armas and Monserrate Street, the street recognized for its history and important role in communications. Oficios, Mercaderes, and San Ignacio street also lead to Monserrate Street.
