The Hotel Inglaterra is the oldest hotel in Cuba and for years it was a very important building for the Caribbean country. The hotel dates back to 1844, at that time called El Café. In 1875, Joaquín Payret sold this small café to Juan de Villamil, who joined this venue to a hotel called Americana located next to the Café, forming the Hotel Inglaterra. At that time, this area of the city was already a privileged and popular zone.
The architecture of this area blends various styles to create its refined style of luxury. The Mudejar style stands out in the interior and the neoclassical style on the exterior. Its façade is classic Hispanic colonial style. These elements are complemented by a dazzling interior.
Apart from its architecture, the hotel stands out for having witnessed great historical moments in Cuba's history. One of them was when national hero José Martí, during the preparation of the war, made a speech at the hotel. Some of its most famous guests were the famous Spanish writer Federico García Lorca, the Russian dancer Anna Pavlova or the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, among many others.
One of the most special spots in the hotel is its Colonial restaurant. Since 1994, Cuban artists have been decorating their walls with different paintings and images.
As a result of its majestic nature, the Hotel Inglaterra has declared a National Monument in 1981. It is an architectural and historical symbol of Havana.
