The Iglesia del Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje is located in the Plaza del Cristo (Christ Square) in Old Havana. Between the tall palm trees and tropical vegetation, lies this magnificent church. This area is not as crowded with tourists as the other plazas because it is slightly out of the way from the historical center of the city. However, it is what makes this site a great getaway.
The church was completed in 1732. However, before the church was erected, it was franciscan chapel. The chapel was famous among sailors and seafarers who came to ask for safe journeys and arrivals to their destinations. After the seaman's safe trips, they would return to the chapel as a sign of gratitude.
The building’s two side towers, peculiar front balcony and its careful Baroque and Mudejar details are just a few of the reasons you should visit Iglesia del Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje.
