The Paseo Martí or Paseo del Prado (Promenade) is a great avenue of Havana located between the area of Old Havana and Centro Habana. It's one of the most central and historical streets of the whole city. During the 19th century, it was the place of meeting for women. Nowadays, it continues to be the most visited places by Cubans and tourists.
It was constructed in 1772 under the colonial government of the Marqués de la Torre when Cuba was one of the most prosperous Spanish colonies. Its construction was inspired by famous promenades like those of Paris or Barcelona. Today, there are eight bronze lions watching over the promenade. These statues were added in 1920.
This important avenue extends for 2 km, from the Fuente de la India or the Noble Havana(Water fountain) to the Malecón of Havana itself. It is divided into four sections: El Paseo, El Parque Central where a sculpture in honour of the Cuban poet José Martí stands. Don't be scared if you hear men arguing aloud, groups of people usually meet here to discuss baseball. The square of the majestic Capitolio Nacional de Cuba is another of its sections; and finally the Parque de la Fraternidad, full of statues of leaders from all over the continent.
At the end of the tour, you will feel rewarded by finding yourself in front of the mouth of the Malecón Bahía (Bay). From here, you will be able to admire part of Vedado's coastline.
In addition to its natural charm, every weekend there are small markets and street fairs along with the different parks on the avenue where you can buy almost any object you could think of.
