Segundo Cabo Palace, Old Havana

The Palacio del Segundo Cabo (Segundo Cabo Palace) is the tallest building in the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana. Its neoclassical details, columns, and semicircular arches make it stand out among its neighbors, which includes the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (General Captains Palace).

The palace began construction in 1772, two years after the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales had begun its own. Spanish architect Don Antonio Fernández de Trebejos y Zaldívar headed the Spanish initiative meant to improve the environment surrounding the Plaza de Armas.

The palace was initially built to serve as the Casa de Administración de Correos (Post Office Administration), but, like many other buildings in Havana, it adapted to the city’s needs. The Palacio del Segundo Cabo (Segundo Cabo Palace) was used as an office for the secretary, the mayor, and as a home for the Deputy Inspector General, Segundo Cabo. It is from this Deputy inspector, that the palace acquires its name.

In 2008 the palace was restored. However, the restoration did not affect any of the palace’s features as it mainly sought to deal with the cracks the humidity of the sea had caused. Visitors can still enjoy the palaces’s original beauty. The palace’s central courtyard embodies all of the traditional peculiarities of the Spanish Andalusian patio-style and exudes vegetation. And, on the inside, visitors can step into grand ceremonial rooms and offices.

Today, the palace hosts exhibitions that demonstrate the relationship between Cuba and Europe as well as socio-cultural and scientific events. It also offers educational activities for children, adolescents, and adults.
