Cojímar is a small fishing village east of Havana. It is famous for being the place where Ernest Hemingway set out to write one of his most famous works, The Old Man and the Sea. As he spent a lot of time in the area, the inhabitants became so close to him that when he died in the 1960s, they built a bust in his honour. Cojímar is also a town of great history and culture, located very close to the coast.
The town grew around the Tower of Cojimar, one of the most visited places in Cojimar today. It began as a simple village of fishermen and watchmen of the tower, but the population grew, admired by the resistance they put up to the invading English. It finally reached its maximum splendour at the beginning of the 19th century, when streets, palaces and luxury villas were built to accommodate high military officials and wealthy families.
In Cojímar there are many interesting places to visit, such as the Hemingway Monument, with the aforementioned bust, La Terraza Restaurant, frequented by the writer, and the Pan American Stadium, which was built for 1991 Pan American Games.
