The Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco de Asís (San Francisco de Asís Church and Convent) in Old Havana is sure to catch your eye. The beautiful church and convent is an impressive white stone architectural structure. A visit to the Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco de Asís is a unique chance to experience how religion was practiced in old Cuba.
Construction on the church began and was completed within the 16th century. Between 1719 and 1738, the church and convent underwent a number of modifications in an effort to adapt the structure to the baroque style of the time.
The structure of the church is supported by 12 columns, representing the 12 apostles, and has three wide aisles. It also houses one of the tallest towers of its times, constructed by José Arcés. The convent houses two cloistered galleries connected by a beautiful marble staircase.
Inside the church, you are sure to be amazed by the gold detail on the walls, the art, and its sophisticated architecture. You can also find the Museo de Arte Sacro (Museum of Religious Art and History), which displays valuable religious objects and is home to a concert hall dedicated exclusively to chamber music. And if you climb to the bell tower, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of a large part of the city and the square. Outside the church visitors can enjoy a garden dedicated to maria Teresa de Calcuta full of sculptures made by modern artists.
