Inside this old colonial house, visitors can find a museum honouring the work of Oswaldo Guayasamín, one of the most outstanding Ecuadorian painters and a prominent Havana figure. The Museo Casa Oswaldo Guayasamín (Oswaldo Guayasamín House Museum), inaugurated in 1992, is located on Calle Obra Pía (Obra Pía Street) in the beautiful historic center of Old Havana.
Oswaldo Guayasamín insisted on the opening of the museum, which exhibits several forms of South American art. Eventually, it was restored by the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office), which works to preserve old colonial buildings across the city. During the restoration, mural paintings were found. Today, they are used to elevate the artistic richness of the museum.
Inside, the museum houses three permanent exhibitions: one displays Cuban plastic art and the others are used for conferences as well as events that relate to Oswaldo Guayasamín and Ecuador. The other galleries in the museum are used to display Cuban art and its evolution over the years. And make sure to visit this magnificent colonial house’s gift shop where you can buy traditional Ecuadorian objects.
