The Museo de la Orfebrería (Silversmithing Museum) in Old Havana is located in an old and elegant colonial house on Calle Obispo (Obispo Street). It is the same house where eighteenth-century silversmith, Gregorio Tabares, lived and provided workshops. It’s history makes it the perfect host to the Museo de la Orfebrería. The Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office) recognizes its importance and continues to preserve the building dedicated to the ancient and precious art of silversmithing.
Visitors are sure to recognize the building by its distinguishable facade, a second-floor balcony, large windows and doors. And inside, visitors will find beautiful collections of gold and silverwork, which old Cuban families brought together and created.
The ground floor of the museum is filled with jewellery, watches, coin collections, toiletries and ashtrays. While the second floor is swelling with rooms dedicated to weapons, canes, religious pieces, lighting and cutlery.
The Museo de la Orfebrería also houses temporary exhibitions, conferences, courses, and even guided tours, which give visitors the opportunity to learn the totality of the history of the museum. Today, besides being a functioning museum, the building is also headquarters to the Congregación de Plateros de Cuba (Society of Cuban Silversmiths), which was founded in 1665.
