The Museo Casa de Asia (Asia House Museum) is located on Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street). The museum is housed inside an old colonial structure that highlights the relationship between Cuba and Asia, one that has existed since the 17th century. Inside, visitors can discover more about this relationship as well as appreciate the richness and beauty of Asian culture in Cuba.
The museum’s permanent exhibition, Galeón de Manila, is particularly worth exploring. It traces the ancient roads travelled by the Spanish throughout Asia. They sought to bring back goods and objects that would attract the attention of the powerful colonial families in the city of Havana. Some of the objects brought back included porcelain and silverware collections. Other exhibitions include the Tesoros de Oriente or the Treasures of the East, which features striking decorative art from India, China, Japan and others. And even Fidel Castro has collaborated with the museum by donating different objects to a number of exhibitions.
The Museo Casa de Asia is responsible for carrying out cultural activities, workshops, conferences and even live shows. It is also home to a special library, which features old and recent books.
