You can find Fort Saint Charles (Fortaleza de Carlos de la Cabaña) inside the Militar Morro-Cabaña Historical Park (Parque Histórico Militar Morro-Cabaña) in Havana. The overwhelming size of the fortress is enough to transport you back to the era of Spanish rule in the Caribbean.
After the English invaded the island in 1762, the Spanish crown decided to better protect the weak areas of the city. One of these protections: Fort Saint Charles. The fort, created in the 18th century, was considered the largest in the continent during its time. Its size and strategic position made the castle a great tool for defending the city of Havana.
The fort is made up of a central bastion and a semi-bastion on each side. Its high entrance, featuring a large shield, is what attracts visitors most. Inside, visitors encounter a large town square as well as various streets and ramps once, all of which was once walked upon by warriors and generals.
And while for many years the fort found its purpose in its warriors, in times of dictatorships and revolutions the fort was repurposed. It has served as a prison and as a homebase during the Che Guevara movement.
The 1992 renovations of the Fort saw the opening of the Weapons Museum and the Casa del Ché Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Casa del Ché). Today, the fort is also home to various cultural events including the Havana International Book Fair.
