The Museo del Chocolate (Chocolate Museum) is located between calle Amargura y la Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street) in Old Havana. Visitors can learn about cacao and, its most famous derivative, chocolate through exhibits, posters from all over the world, and other documents. Live through the history of one most popular products in the world and discover its journey from the Americas to Europe. The visit is sure to sweeten your tour through Old Havana.

The museum is housed in the building previously known as the Casa de la Cruz Verde or the House of the Green Cross. The name of the historic building comes from the Green Cross that rests on the corner between Calle Amargura y la Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street)

The two story building, that dates back to the 18th century, has always shared a split ownership: families have lived on the top floor and local shops and businesses have occupied the ground floor. Over time, the building found itself abandoned. Eventually, it was restored and the Museo del Chocolate was inaugurated in November 2003 in honor of the relationship between Cuba and Belgium, a country famous for its chocolate.

Inside, visitors can find collections of porcelain chocolate cups from different european countries, bakelite moulds, tools, containers used in the preparation of chocolate, and jam recipients brought over from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. The Belgic museum was used as inspiration for the renovation of the Museo del Chocolate

And you can’t leave the museum without a piece of chocolate to bring back home. Make sure to visit the gift section of the museum where you can shop for all kinds of exquisite chocolates
