If you enjoy colonial-era art and architecture, the Palacio del Marqués de Arcos (Palace of the Marqués de Arcos) is a must. You can find the palace next to the Palacio del Conde Lombillo located in the Plaza de la Catedral.
The palace, originally intended to be the home for the royal treasurer Diego Peñalver y Angulo, began construction in 1741. The treasurer then expanded the palace by adding a second-floor and other modifications. After his death, the treasurer’s son, Ignacio de Peñalver y Cárdenas, inherited the palace. His title as Marqués de Arcos was passed on to the palace and is the name we recognize the palace by today.
The palace stayed within the family until the 19th century. Ownership of the palace changed hands in 1828, when it was taken over by the Administración de Correos (Post Office). It was later occupied by the Liceo Artístico y Literario. Today, the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office) preserves this cultural and artistic space.
Regardless, the palace continues to stand as an exceptional piece of architecture due to its baroque style and two distinct facades that provide access to both the square and the notorious Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street). One of the facades rests on Doric-style columns and large windows. While the other bears a balcony and provides access to a Cuban style gallery, adorned in green plants, arches, and columns that support the building.
