The Museo Armería 9 de Abril (Armory Museum April 9) can be found on Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street) in Old Havana. Large signs encouraging a visit to the museum are posted in shops up and down the street. If you are interested in learning about the history of the Cuban nation, hunting, weapons, and fishing, the Museo Armería 9 de Abril is a must.

The building itself is old, but thanks to the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office), which focuses on restoring and promoting architecture from the city’s past, the museum has been well-preserved.

Before it was a museum, the building was known as the Compañía Armera de Cuba. The armoury, housed at the site since 1934, suffered a historic assault on April 9th, 1958 by the revolutionary organization known as the Movimiento 26 de julio. The movement sought to dissolve Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship. Batista had reached his position in government by executing coups d’etat after coups d’etat until succeeding. He was eventually overthrown in 1959. And although the assault on the armoury on April 9th, 1958 did not succeed in overthrowing Batista, it is still recognized with an exhibition that reminds us of those who lost their lives in the act.

However, this is not the only exhibition in the Museo Armería 9 de Abril (9 de Abril Armory Museum). Among the collections, visitors can find long and short firearms, knives, historical weapons, and antique weapons used during the country’s revolutionary era. Be sure to keep an eye out for the donations made by Fidel Castro in the 1990s, 19th-century weapons, and those used by “Che” Guevara.
