La Fuente de la India or La Noble Habana (Water Fountain) is located in a roundabout between Capitolio Nacional de Cuba (Capitol Building) and the Hotel Saratoga, in Centro Habana, in Havana. This statue is made of marble and was sculpted in 1873 for Count Villanueva.
The Fuente de la India depicts the image of the native woman named Habana, wife of the regent of the area before Columbus' arrival and who is believed to have given the name to Cuba's capital.
In her right hand, the statue holds the city's coat of arms, while in her left hand she holds a basket of fruit. She is surrounded by four dolphins whose mouths used to spout water. A shell surrounds the pedestal. The image of the woman is wearing a feathered crown on her head.
This neoclassical-style fountain has inspired several poems and fantastic stories. The beautiful representation of Havana is a meeting place for the inhabitants of Centro Habana, where people gather to talk and tell stories on a daily basis.
