The Sanctuary of Saint Lazarus, in the municipality of Boyeros, near the city of Havana, is a charming church famous throughout Cuba. It is the country's National Shrine and also a place of pilgrimage for many faithful who ask the saint for miracles and wishes.
The sanctuary was built near a hospital where people suffering from leprosy or other skin diseases received medical attention. It is for this reason that it was dedicated to Saint Lazarus, patron saint of the sick, of healing and of the poor. Saint Lazarus is one of the most beloved saints in Cuba and has always been related to the sanctuary.
The structure of the sanctuary is very simple, although in the '90s two lateral naves were added to allow access to more pilgrims. Within its walls, there are several altars and chapels dedicated to many saints, but the most outstanding of all is, of course, the one dedicated to Saint Lazarus, with the oldest image of the sanctuary.
In January 1998 Pope John Paul II visited the temple and toured its rooms with other pilgrims and religious.
