You can find one of the most famous areas of Havana in the neighbourhood of Vedado: Avenida de los Presidentes (President's Avenue). Famous for its statues in honour of Latinamerican presidents of the past, architectural styles and green areas, it is considered an open-air gallery for works of significant historical value, art galleries and other important cultural centres.
Commonly known to Cubans as Calle G (G Street), the monuments featured on the avenue combine history and art to honor famous presidents, such as Simón Bolívar, Salvador Allende, Eloy Alfaro, Benito Juárez and Omar Torrijos.
One of the most significant pieces on the Avenida de los Presidentes is dedicated to Calixto García, a former Cuban General. And at the end of the Avenue stands the monument in honour of José Miguel Gómez, one of the leaders of the rebel forces in the Cuban War of Independence against Spain and the second president of the country. This majestic monument offers visitors terraces and benches to sit and savour the view.
On the same Avenue, you can find the remarkable Casa de las Américas (House of the Americas). The house seeks to promote works by Latin American artists. And, although the Casa de las Américas is an artwork in and of itself, take the time to venture inside and enjoy its bookstore and art gallery.
Walking Avenida de los Presidentes may call for a moment of rest and refreshment, so stop at one of the hotels or cafeterias located among the artworks of the avenue.
