You can find the Museo de Arte Colonial (Museum of Colonial Art) in front of the Plaza de la Catedral, in Old Havana. The museum, constructed during the colonial era, continues to be one of the main attractions of the area.
Originally, the building was constructed as a home for Governor Luis Chacaón, a Creole man of high military rank, in 1720. Later, the house changed hands and became property of the Condes de Bayona family who passed their name unto the large mansion. Subsequently, the home became host to the Real Colegio de Escribanos De La Habana (Royal College of Notaries of Havana), the La Discusión journal, and a liquor company. In 1969, the mansion was restored and repurposed as a museum.
The museum transformed bedrooms and hallways into elegant exhibition galleries open to the public. If you’re looking for colonial era decor make sure to visit the exhibitions that display some of the palace’s furniture, crockery, and stained glass. Visitors can also tour the palace's dining rooms and bedrooms. Guided tours, lectures, concerts, and several other cultural activities are offered at the museum.
