José Martí is known among Cubans as the founder of the Partido Revolucionario Cubano (Cuban Revolutionary Party) and the ultimate defender of the country’s independence against Spain. Visitors across the country can find monuments and sculptures dedicated to José Martí, but the Museo Casa Natal de José Martí (José Martí Museum) in Old Havana dives deeper into this important figure’s life.

The house is painted with brilliant blues and ravishing yellows. And, on one of the walls, you can find a plate that reads “José Martí nació en esta casa el día 28 de enero de 1853,” which translates to “José Martí was born in this house on January 28th, 1853.” The museum was built ten years before Martí was born and he lived in it until he died in 1895. However, it was not declared a national museum until 1925

After the museum opened its doors alongside journalists and a board of trustees, it underwent meditation and even changed owners. By 1994 the museum was added to the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office) list of historical and cultural sites in Cuba

The Museo Casa Natal de José Martí is the oldest museum in the city. It highlights the importance of the Cuban revolutionary, journalist Arturo de Carricarte’s struggle, as well as other of his followers. And today It preserves valuable objects and some of José Martí’s documents.

Inside, visitors can also appreciate the traditional Cuban 19th century decor as well as the collections that reflect the life of the Cuban national hero. A total of 7 collections the first is dedicated to Martí’s childhood and youth. The rest of the collections reflect the revolutionary cause that ended in the Cuban figure’s deportation, his time in the United States, Montecristo and other South American countries. The collections exhibit furniture, documents, manuscripts and even some of the martyr’s shackles from his imprisonment.
