The Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta (Castle) is one of the three main fortresses in Havana. It stands at the entrance of the Puerto de La Habana(Port of Havana) and its construction began in 1589 and ended in 1600.
In 2003 the Castle was awarded the National Restoration Prize thanks to the rigorous and intense restoration program that had been carried out on it during the previous year.
Although it no longer acts as a defence for the city, it is home to the Museo del Castillo(Museum), which displays objects from sunken Spanish fleets and information about the slave trade and commerce in Cuba over the past centuries.
