The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum) in Havana is an interesting museum located in two buildings next to Paseo Martí (Promenade), in the centre of the city. Its main objective is to promote and conserve Cuban artworks from the 16th century to the present. It has 24 rooms with more than 45.000 works among which there are art pieces from the ancient world with collections of Rome, Greece and Egypt.
The two buildings that make up this museum are The Palacio de Bellas Artes, which displays works of universal art dating from 500 BC. There is also a large collection of Spanish works including a canvas painting by El Greco, Roman mosaics, and a canvas painting by Gainsborough.
The other building is the Centro Asturiano, which focuses on Cuban art. The works are arranged chronologically and include some of the most important painters like Guillermo Collazo, Rafael Blanco, Raúl Martínez and Wilfredo Lam.
In addition, the museum has its own library and theatre that offers a wide cultural programme.
Thanks to its large collection of works, it is considered one of the best museums in all of Latin America and the Caribbean.
