The Parque de la Fraternidad is located in Centro Habana, a municipality between Vedado and Old Habana. It is one of the most popular spaces in the area and also one of the best-connected, as it is close to several bus lines and taxi services.
The first park was built in 1892 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ Arrival in America In the nineteenth century it began to be used as a military camp, and was later remodelled, but lost its entire infrastructure after a cyclone in 1926. Shortly thereafter, the park would be remodelled again to hold the Pan American Conference in 1927, reborn as a space with several surrounding sidewalks, manicured gardens and various busts of American leaders such as Abraham Lincoln.
In the very centre of the park is a large ceiba tree called the Árbol de la Fraternidad Americana (Tree of American Brotherhood) that was transplanted from the Cerro neighbourhood.
In the surrounding area of the Parque de la Fraternidad, there are several points of interest and historical monuments such as the imposing Capitolio Nacional de Cuba (Capitol Building), the Real Fábrica de Tabacos Partagás (Tobacco Factory), and the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso (Theater)
