The Hotel Habana Libre located in Vedado, Havana, was built in 1958 and operated by the Hilton Hotels International group. It was Latin America’s tallest hotel with over 630 hotel rooms.
A year later, the revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro began to use the hotel as its headquarters and expropriated the hotel from the American company. Commander Castro installed his office in the La Castellana room inside the hotel. It is the same room where the CIA tried to assassinate the leader twice.
In 1996, the hotel underwent yet another change in management, and today the four-star hotel is managed by the Spanish company known as Sol Meliá.
Within its doors, the hotel has hosted important galas and served as international media headquarters during the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1998 and the historic visit of United States President Barack Obama in 2016.
The hotel walls are decorated with elegant paintings, all produced by modern Cuban artists like Amelia Peláez, Alfredo Sosa Bravo and René Portocarrero.
