As you walk down Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street) in Old Havana, you will come across a bright yellow painted house. Its large and striking balconies, windows, and exquisite baroque facades are sure to make you do a double-take, stop, and admire its beauty. And if you want to peek inside, you can. Step into the Museo Casa de la Obra Pía (Obra Pía House Museum), the house-museum dedicated to domestic colonial architecture.
The house was built in 1648 for the aristocracy of Havana. This tier of society liked to live in large Spanish influenced palaces and so it was modelled as such. Its baroque facade, arches, columns, balconies and its own family crest exemplify this extraordinary style of architecture. However, the Cuban touch is still very much present within the house museum. Its plants and yellow brights walls are just two of the details that stand out.
Inside, the exhibitions are arranged by themes that aim to illustrate the life of the wealthy colonial families of Havana. Visitors can admire the historical and artistic pieces housed inside the house museum. Some of which includes porcelain pieces, paintings, glassware, tapestries, silverware and sculptures.
The Museo Casa de la Obra Pía is the driving force behind important socio-cultural projects executed in the city, which aim to promote Cuban culture and traditions, such as ancient textile crafts. Additionally, the Hermandad de Bordadoras y Tejedoras de Belén (Association of Embroiderers and Sewers in Belén) established their headquarters in the house museum in 1994.
