The José Martí Memorial is located at the centre of Revolution Square in Havana, the capital of Cuba. Standing at 141 meters, the monument is considered to be the tallest building in the city as well as the largest monument dedicated to José Martí, a Cuban writer and thinker. The statue in front of the building stands upon a star-shaped tower and is surrounded by gardens.
The top of the memorial can be accessed by climbing almost 600 steps to the top at no cost or by paying 2 CUC to go up in an elevator. The observation deck at the top assures a stunning view of the city of Havana.
The museum dedicated to José Martí at the base of the memorial was opened in 1996. Inside you can find the Cuban writers personal objects, drawings, and early editions of his work. You can also find an impressive ceramic mural engraved with 79 thoughts of the Cuban hero in 10-carat gold.
